Notes & Personnel Info
Recording information: Egrem Studios, Havana, Cuba.
With a canon of potentially hundreds of compositions attributed to his pen, Cuban singer-percussionist Gonzalo Asencio is the undisputed king of guaguanco rumba. While legend may or may not have distorted the facts surrounding his life, there is little doubt that many of his compositions were stolen by other performers and that, for many years of his life, his contribution to the rumba community was somewhat uncredited. This fine Smithsonian collection aims to remedy that. With mesmerizing performances by Conjunto Todo Rumbero, led by percussionist Orlando "Puntilla" Rios, TRIBUTE TO GONZALO ASENCIO is the first album of its kind released on disc, and it brings to vibrant life the passion, wit, romantic sweep, and political insight of Tio Tom's best-loved songs.
